In a recent shocking development in business world, U.S. health officials have banned dozens of medications made by Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd after the generic drug maker failed to fix numerous problems with its manufacturing operations, including record keeping and other procedural issues. The list of banned drugs includes popular antibiotics and cholesterol medicines made by India's drug giant Ranbaxy Laboratories.
The ban is because of poor quality in two of the Ranbaxy factories. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says consumers who already have the drugs should not worry. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday said it would block more than 30 generic drugs from entering the United States following ongoing records violations at Ranbaxy's Dewas and Paonta Sahib plants in India. It also will not approve any new drugs made at the plants until the problems are resolved, the FDA said.
Repeated testing has not found any contamination and Ranbaxy can continue selling medicines made at any of its other factories. FDA officials said the violations concerned the manufacturing process and not the drugs themselves, urging patients not to stop taking any medications and to talk to their doctors.The showdown instead is over what the FDA said on Tuesday is Ranbaxy's failure to correct significant manufacturing problems that could lead to subpotent drugs, allergic reactions or other problems.
The move also may affect a US program sending AIDS drugs to Africa as Ranbaxy is a leading supplier.
