In a significant decision it was announced that Athens Olympics silver medalist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore will carry the national flag during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games on August 8.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) sent a release to this effect on Monday after reaching the decision in a meeting.

Rathore, aged 38, is scheduled to begin his competition on August 12. He had reached Beijing about 10 days ago and moved into the Games Village on July 27. He has been diligently training and getting acclimatised to the conditions since then in his bid to capture a second medal in the Olympics.

The Secretary of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and the deputy chef de mission of the Indian contingent for the Beijing Games, Baljit Sethi, said that Rathore was the most deserving candidate to carry the Indian flag after his medal in the last Olympics, the best individual medal of independent India. “He is most deserving and very happy to be nominated to do the honour,” Sethi said.
