The crime that Dr. Amit Kumar did was indeed very much shocking and it created
a sensation across the country. But for this we cannot only blame him for
doing such type of business. But there is market of organ (not only just
kidneys but all the organs) trade thriving online through social networking
sites.
Social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook are openly
being used as a source for procuring and selling kidneys in contraventions to
the law. According to one survey Orkut has more than 600 members for almost 40
odd kidney transplants whereas Facebook has thousands of members worldwide.
Donors are standing in a row but prospective recipients and their relatives
are also very much keen on scouting the net. Almost all the donors are
generally needy and on the contrary, the recipients are also in need of this
type of rare organ.
More than a half of the prospective donors contacted Orkut
and received a reply very soon. Many of them were so needy and eager to sell
their organ that they even submitted their health details and test reports so
that talks can be carried forward as soon as possible. Orkut admitted that
such communities are very much in the market and are running very
successfully.
