We have different reasons to worship mother. We call our mother land Dharti Mata, Any goddesses in our country are called Maa. Even if we are hurt badly the first thing that comes from us is ohhii Maa.In India, there's no place that reveres mothers more than Bollywood. Humare pas maa hai .Mother's have always been an integral part of Hindi Cinema. No other film industry of any country of the world have so much variations on mother son relationship as in Bollywood. Our most of films are inspired(copied) from the foreign language films but the thing which is never ever copied is Mother. Maa has always remained original.
Maa Ka Balidan
Formerly, the mothers in most of the hindi films were shown as the symbol of Balidan.The mother of all Bollywood mothers, of course, was Nargis in Mother India. Representing both motherhood and Mother Earth, who also nurtures and occasionally punishes, Nargis has immortalized the Indian mother on celluloid.This was probably a first film which was totally based on an Indian mother. On one end the mother would do anthing for her children but if the child does anything wrong or which is harmful the society the same mother will not even think once to kill that evil son. That was shown in the legendery film Mother India.In the film Nargis kills her bad son Sunil Dutt.sunil Dutt is full confident that his mother cannot kill him and says "Tu mujhe nahi maar sakti, Tu meri Ma hai but Nargis says "Pahele me ek aurat hu " and shoots her beloived son just for the sake of village's pride.Before some 2 decades the most favorite maa of all bollywood heros was Nirupa Roy.
In the great film Deewar the evergreen mother Nirupa Roy Of the bad boy Amitabh Bachchan hands over the gun to her goody Boy son Shashi kapoor and bless him saying " Goli Chalate Waqt tere Haath Na Kanpe". In Amar Akbar Anthony the mother who looses her three sons is a tragic queen.In Muqdar Ka Sikander this indian filmy poor mother adopts the orphan and abused boy Amitabh Bachchan and protects him from the evils of the world.Nutan in Karma looses her whole family and ofcourse her speech for the sake of the nation. Sharmila Tagor in Arandhana spends her whole life in jail for the murder she has actually not committed and has to leave her son for his bright future.Reema Lagoo in Vaastav kills her son Sanjay Dutt. Sanju is upcoming underworld Don and is fed up of his life as some big dons from underworld and police is after him and asks for Mukti. Reema Lagoo shoots him saying "Mene Use Mukti Dedi"
The great mother Durga Khote in Mughal E Azam has to sacrifice her son Salim as her son and husband are against each other.In Maine Pyar Kiya the newcomer mother reema Lagoo also has to choose from her husband and son Saman Khan.She is a typical filmy mother whose heart is always with her son but cannot go against her husband.
Maa Ke Dil Me badle Ki Aag
The fimy mothers are some times very desperate to take the revenge from the villians. In the Yash Chopra directed movie Trishul Waheeda Raheman is the unmarried mother of the chup chap sa ladka amitabh Bachchan and inspires him to take revenge from Sanjeev kumar.In Karan Arjun the mother Rakhee waits for her sons to come and take the revenge from the villians Amrish puri and his family.But her sons are actually killed by the villians and they are born again (reincarnation) and Rakhee tells them the whole story and inspires them to take revenge.In Ram Lakhan she is a mother of 2 sons one good and another bad boy and both of them takes badala in their style.In the climax rakhee herself comes in the white saree and kills the villians.
Naye Zamane Ki Mom
In many films nowadays there are not that kind of tyhpical filmy mothers.They are modern and understands the situation very well. In the films like Kuch Kuch hota hai,Hum Apke Hai Kaun,Maine Pyaar kiya,DDLJ, the mothers were really modern.In Kuch Kuch hota hai the hero Shahrukh Khan would even call her mother Farida jalal "sexy" In DDLJ the Farida Jalal shows the way to run away to get married to her daughter Kajol and her boyfriend Shahrukh Khan.Hema Malini in Baghban was an excellent modern mother.Kiron Kher in Hum Tum is shown a funny mother and she does anything to make her daughter Rani Mukherjee laugh.
Maa Aur Itni Zulmi
Its not always that mothers in hindi movies are shown daya k saagar.They are some times with negative shades also. Bindu in the movie Biwi Ho To Aisi is as good as hitler only.In the movie Beta the role of aruna irani is the best example of modern zulmi saas who attemps to kill her step son Anil Kapoor. Ofcourse Lalita Pawar and Bindu in all the social movies of 1970s and 1980 have played the role of this kind of zulmi saas. But they never die in the films they reform in the end.
Is Maa Ka Dil Hai Ya Patthar
In the modern movies of today the mothers are showmn selfish like in the movie Akele Hum Akele Tum the mother Manisha Koirala leaves her husband Aamir khan and son to become a great singer. In Raja Hindustani also karishma Kapoor leaves the town of Aamir Khan after giving birth to a child. The child is then raised by Aamir Khan single handed.But still these filmy mothers cannot live away from their kids and loving hubby and comes back in the normal life as past.
